April 1940, Nick Everard, divorced and fortythree, is now in command of the destroyer, INTENT, trying to prevent a German landing in Norway. As the battle opens INTENT is crippled with engine defects, lacking fuel, and with all her technicians dead. Limping into a Norwegian fjord to try and effect repairs Nick finds that the Germans have invaded. But INTENT needs fuel, and hearing of a German fuel-tanker in a nearby anchorage the crew plan to raid and capture it. Only by enlisting the help of a Norwegian steam yacht commander and his daughter can the riad succeed.
