The downland village and Miss Read's school still look as they did one hundred years ago, but there have been many changes; electricity and mains water have made life much more comfortable, families are smaller, and many now own a car. But there is a price to pay for these changes. The community is saddened to see old cottages where their grandparents once lived being brought by outsiders who alter them beyond recognition, and who themselves are often too tired from their commuter lives to take part in village affairs. Whilst the car widens the family's horizons for days out and holidays, it can also take children to other schools - and numbers at the Fairacre school are now so low that Miss Read fears it may be closed by the authorities.
